Ravichandran Ashwin, one of India’s most celebrated spinners, will play the entire Big Bash League (BBL) season with Sydney Thunder. The news comes just a day after he went unsold at the ILT20 auction in Dubai.
Ashwin recently announced his retirement from the IPL, where he ended as the fifth-highest wicket-taker with 187 wickets at an economy of 7.2. Now, he becomes the first capped Indian cricketer to play in the BBL.
From ILT20 to BBL
Initially, Ashwin had planned to feature in the ILT20 2025-26 season, listing himself at the highest base price of USD 120,000. But when franchises showed no interest, he requested his name be withdrawn from the accelerated bidding round.
Ashwin explained his thought process clearly:
“I had agreed verbally with ILT20 but the offers were low. Thunder came with a good deal. Since ILT20 teams had closed direct signings, I listed myself at the maximum base price. I was happy to go to the BBL if the bid didn’t meet my expectations.”
A Big Win for Sydney Thunder
The Sydney Thunder move was not sudden. Several teams, including Hobart Hurricanes, Sydney Sixers, and Adelaide Strikers, had shown interest. But Thunder secured his signature for the full season, ensuring a huge boost for their spin attack.

Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg welcomed Ashwin warmly.
“It’s a big moment for the BBL to welcome Ravi. I’ve spoken with him personally many times. He’s a breath of fresh air, and fans will enjoy watching him play and interact during the season.”
