Labuschagne’s Comeback: Words Turned Into Runs
Steve Smith couldn’t hide his pride.
He revealed that Marnus Labuschagne had told him before the season began, “I’ll be in that Test team come the first Ashes Test.”
And true to his word, Labuschagne has delivered — four centuries in five innings, including two back-to-back Sheffield Shield hundreds.
Smith messaged him recently saying how proud he was:
“He’s backed up his words. He’s done a lot of things right. It’s a pretty big statement.”
After being dropped earlier this year against the West Indies, Labuschagne went back to the grind, simplified his approach, and started scoring big again.
Finding Rhythm Again
Labuschagne admitted he had become “too technical” in his game — overthinking every move.
Smith’s advice?
“Stop thinking so much. Watch the ball and react.”
That shift has brought back the free-flowing Marnus everyone remembers — the batter who once piled up runs with ease. His confident stroke play and calm presence at the crease show a player who has rediscovered his rhythm.
Where Will Labuschagne Bat?
The big question now: Where does he fit in Australia’s batting order?
With Usman Khawaja confirmed to open and Sam Konstas struggling, there’s talk of Labuschagne stepping up to open the innings — just as he did in the World Test Championship Final against South Africa.
Smith said:
“He can open, he can bat three. It’s not too different — he could be in first ball anyway.”
The final call may depend on Cameron Green’s bowling workload and whether Beau Webster adds an extra bowling option.

Smith’s Take on the Batting Order
Steve Smith, who has himself moved between No. 3 and No. 4, says he’s relaxed about where he bats.
“I’m not too fussed. We’ll talk to Patty [Cummins] and the coaches to see what fits best.”
His calm confidence reflects the team’s stability — and a trust in the selectors to pick what’s best for the side heading into the Ashes.

Backing the Young Guns
Smith also spoke about Sam Konstas, who’s still finding his footing in domestic cricket.
“He’s figuring out how he wants to play. You can’t overload young players with advice — they have to find their own way.”
Smith praised Konstas’ natural ability to handle fast bowling, calling him a “bright talent” with plenty of time to grow.
