Phil Salt is redefining what it means to be a modern T20 opener. He blends fearless strokeplay with meticulous preparation. His mantra: “I want to be the man.”

Mindset and preparation
Salt rejects the lazy label of “see ball, hit ball.” Behind every shot is planning, data and detail. He studies pitch-maps, bowlers’ habits and even their warm-ups. He writes notes in a personal notebook to track trends.
“Everything’s got to have due process,” Salt says. “I want to know exactly where the opposition’s at.”
This analytical mindset helps him adapt across conditions — from Cardiff to Mumbai — and outthink world-class attacks.
Red-hot form for England
Salt is now one of the world’s premier T20 openers. In the last few weeks, he scored 259 runs off 130 balls against South Africa and Ireland, including a career-best 141 at Old Trafford*.
Across the past two years in T20Is he averages 47.66 with a strike rate of 176.27. He has also won back-to-back IPL titles with two franchises.
“I approach every game the same way,” he says. “I want to contribute. I want to enjoy it. That’s when I play my best.”

Small changes, big gains
Salt has worked on his technique. He now holds the bat higher and opens the face to access more scoring zones. This allows him to punish bowlers outside off stump and still attack on the leg side. With only two fielders out, he’s almost impossible to contain.
Life beyond cricket
Fatherhood has added a new chapter. In June, Salt rushed home from the IPL for his son’s birth, then flew back for the final. Days later he helped his team clinch the title. His hunger remains undimmed.

Fast and furious — IPL career strike rates
Salt tops the list of highest IPL career strike rates (minimum 25 innings), proving his global impact.
| Batter | Innings | Average | Strike Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phil Salt | 34 | 34.06 | 175.70 |
| Andre Russell | 115 | 28.20 | 174.17 |
| Tim David | 44 | 32.53 | 173.36 |
| Travis Head | 37 | 34.72 | 170.02 |
| Heinrich Klaasen | 45 | 40.00 | 169.72 |
| Nicholas Pooran | 87 | 34.22 | 168.97 |
Why Salt stands out
Salt’s blend of data-driven preparation and raw power is rare. His IPL strike-rate record shows he’s not a short-term phenomenon. With the T20 World Cup approaching, he’s shaping into one of the most feared openers in the game.
“I don’t want surprises,” Salt says. “I want to be on top of my game. That’s when I play my best.”
