Sri Lanka stormed into the Super Eights of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup after a commanding performance against Australia, built around a sensational unbeaten century from Pathum Nissanka. The hosts overcame an early Australian assault before spinning the game on its head and chasing down the target with authority, leaving Australia on the brink of elimination.

In a dramatic night in Pallekele, Sri Lanka combined disciplined spin bowling, sharp fielding, and clinical batting to outclass a strong Australian side.

Sri Lanka 184 for 2 (Nissanka 100*, Kusal Mendis 51*, Stoinis 2-46) beat Australia 181 (Head 56, Marsh 54, Hemantha 3-37, Chameera 2-36) by eight wickets

Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head added 104 runs for the opening wicket.

Australia start with a bang

Australia came out firing after being sent in to bat, with captain Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head producing a blistering opening stand. The pair attacked relentlessly, racing to 104 runs in just the first 50 legal deliveries.

Both batters brought up half-centuries as Sri Lanka struggled to find answers, especially after pace spearhead Matheesha Pathirana left the field with a calf injury early in his spell. At that stage, Australia looked set for a massive total with multiple power hitters still at the crease.

Sri Lankan spinners trigger collapse

The momentum shifted dramatically once Sri Lanka’s spinners found their rhythm. Legspinner Dushan Hemantha broke the threatening partnership by dismissing Head, opening the door for a remarkable turnaround.

From a dominant 127 for 3 in the 12th over, Australia collapsed under sustained spin pressure. Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana, and Kamindu Mendis combined effectively, while Dushmantha Chameera delivered a superb death-overs spell.

Australia lost 10 wickets for just 77 runs in the final 70 balls, eventually finishing with a total that felt far below par after their explosive start.

Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka added 97 runs for the second wicket.

Nissanka leads the chase with authority

Sri Lanka’s response was confident from the outset. Although they lost an early wicket, Pathum Nissanka took control, capitalising on Australia’s pace-heavy attack.

He dominated the powerplay, guiding Sri Lanka to 61 runs in the first six overs, with elegant strokeplay all around the ground. Partnered by Kusal Mendis, the duo built a strong platform, mixing controlled aggression with smart placement.

Mendis brought up a brisk half-century before falling, but by then the chase was firmly in Sri Lanka’s hands.

Match sealed in style

With the required rate under control, Nissanka shifted gears in the closing overs. He attacked the Australian seamers, striking powerful boundaries and towering sixes to silence any hopes of a comeback.

He eventually reached a magnificent unbeaten century, sealing the victory with two overs to spare and sparking wild celebrations among the home crowd.

Australia face elimination scare

The defeat leaves Australia in a precarious position, needing favorable results elsewhere to keep their tournament hopes alive. Despite a dominant start with the bat, their middle-order collapse and inability to contain Sri Lanka’s top order proved costly.

For Sri Lanka, the win marks a statement performance, driven by spin mastery and a match-winning innings from Nissanka.
