Mitchell Starc has officially retired from T20 internationals to focus on Australia’s busy Test schedule and the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The left-arm quick, 35, played 65 T20Is since his debut in 2012. He was a key part of Australia’s 2021 T20 World Cup win in the UAE. Starc last played T20Is at the 2024 World Cup in the Caribbean. His retirement comes six months before the next edition in India and Sri Lanka.
Starc’s Record in T20Is
Starc claimed 79 wickets in his T20I career, the second-most for Australia. His best bowling figures came in 2022 against West Indies, where he picked 4 for 20. Known for his swing with the new ball and deadly yorkers, he often delivered breakthroughs both early and late in innings.
“Test cricket is and has always been my highest priority,” Starc said. “I’ve loved every T20 game I played for Australia, especially the 2021 World Cup win. The team spirit and fun during that tournament made it unforgettable.”
Why Starc Stepped Away from T20Is
From mid-2026, Australia faces a packed Test schedule. The upcoming fixtures include a home series against Bangladesh, a South Africa tour, four Tests against New Zealand, and five away Tests in India. Australia will also play a one-off 150th anniversary Test against England at the MCG and then head into an away Ashes series in 2027.
The 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia adds to the heavy workload. As defending champions, Australia will look to Starc’s experience in the tournament.
“Looking ahead to India, the Ashes, and the 2027 World Cup, I feel stepping away from T20Is is best for me,” Starc explained. “It allows me to stay fresh, fit, and at my peak for those challenges. It also gives time for the T20 bowling group to build towards the World Cup.”
Australia Without Starc in T20Is
Replacing Starc’s raw pace will be tough. Selector George Bailey admitted, “I’m not sure we’ll find someone swinging the new ball at 145kph. He has been unique with his impact.”
Nathan Ellis is expected to take a bigger role in the squad. Ben Dwarshuis, Sean Abbott, and Xavier Bartlett are also emerging as options. Bailey added that roles may shift rather than finding a direct replacement.
Starc’s Legacy
Starc’s ability to swing the new ball and bowl at the death made him one of the most dangerous T20 bowlers. His influence shaped Australia’s T20 bowling attack over the last decade. While his T20I career ends, fans can still look forward to his dominance in Tests and ODIs.
New Australia T20I Squad vs New Zealand
Australia has also announced their squad for the three-match T20I series against New Zealand in October. Mitchell Marsh will captain the side. Cameron Green misses out to play Sheffield Shield, while Nathan Ellis is unavailable for personal reasons.
Squad: Mitchell Marsh (capt), Sean Abbott, Xavier Bartlett, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Owen, Matthew Short, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa.
