Dunith Wellalage Faces Personal Tragedy Amid Asia Cup Campaign

Sri Lanka’s rising star Dunith Wellalage has been hit by a personal tragedy. His father, Suranga Wellalage, passed away on September 18 — the same day Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan to qualify for the Super Four of the Asia Cup.

The match against Afghanistan was Dunith Wellalage’s first at this Asia Cup.

The 22-year-old allrounder only received the heartbreaking news after the match. Sri Lanka won by six wickets with eight balls to spare, but soon after, Wellalage flew back home to be with his family.

This sudden loss has put his Asia Cup participation in doubt. Sri Lanka have at least three more crucial fixtures lined up — against Bangladesh (September 20), Pakistan (September 23) and India (September 26) — but it’s uncertain whether Wellalage will return in time.

Wellalage was playing his first T20I of the tournament, only his fifth overall in the format. However, he has already made a name in ODIs — 31 matches, with standout figures of 5 for 27 against India in 2024 and 5 for 40 in the 2023 Asia Cup. He was the joint-second highest wicket-taker in that tournament, taking 10 wickets at an average of 17.90.

Sri Lanka fans have poured in messages of support and sympathy. While the team prepares for the Super Four stage, cricket lovers across the region hope Wellalage finds strength and returns to the field soon.
