ICC Suspends USA Cricket Board – What It Means for the Future of the Game

Spread the love

The ICC has suspended USA Cricket (USAC) with immediate effect. This major decision comes after repeated governance failures by the board. However, Team USA will still play in the T20 World Cup 2025 in India and Sri Lanka, and the suspension does not affect cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

ICC was helping USA gain National Governing Body status ahead of the Olympics.

Why the ICC Took This Step

The ICC Board held a virtual meeting on Tuesday and decided to hit the reset button on USA Cricket’s leadership and governance. According to the ICC, USAC failed to:

  • Implement a functional governance structure
  • Progress toward National Governing Body (NGB) status with the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee
  • Prevent reputational damage to cricket in the USA

This suspension follows a three-month warning period given in July 2024 for “free and fair elections” and comprehensive reforms.

Management Now Under ICC Control

The ICC will temporarily take over management of USA national teams, ensuring athletes and the sport remain unaffected. The ICC described the decision as “unfortunate but necessary” to protect the long-term interests of the game.

Cricket in the Olympics Remains Safe

Despite the suspension, USA’s participation in ICC events and the LA 2028 Olympics remains intact. The ICC confirmed that preparations for the Olympics will continue while the governance overhaul is carried out.

The Roadmap for Recovery

A six-step roadmap was created by the ICC’s Normalisation Committee, headed by Jay Shah. It included:

  • Adding three new independent directors
  • Stepping down of the current USAC Board
  • Holding fresh elections
  • Applying for NGB status

Since USAC failed to meet these milestones, the ICC enforced suspension.

Next Steps for USA Cricket

To lift the suspension, USAC must make demonstrable and specific changes to its governance, operations, and status in the cricket ecosystem. The Normalisation Committee will monitor progress and offer guidance during the transition.

ICC’s Commitment to Growth

The ICC reiterated its commitment to supporting cricket in the United States, safeguarding athletes, and strengthening the sport’s global footprint.
