Australia’s T20 World Cup Squad: Cummins, Hazlewood, and David in Focus

Pat Cummins remains touch and go for the T20 World Cup.

Star Pacers on the Radar

Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, two of Australia’s premier fast bowlers, are expected to feature in the provisional T20 World Cup squad. Cummins, recovering from a lumbar stress injury, has only featured in one international match since July. While his return in the Adelaide Test against England showed glimpses of his class, Australia opted for caution, pulling him out for the rest of the series.

Coach Andrew McDonald confirmed Cummins will be named in the 15-man squad due by January 2, with a final decision on his availability pending another scan in four weeks. “Pat will have a scan in another four weeks. That’ll give us clarity for the World Cup,” McDonald said.

Hazlewood, who missed the Ashes due to hamstring and Achilles injuries, is recovering well and is expected to be fit for the tournament. “Josh is returning to bowl and looks good in terms of possible timeframes,” added McDonald.

Tim David: Middle-Order Strength in Recovery

Tim David, a pivotal part of Australia’s middle order, suffered a grade-two right hamstring strain on Boxing Day while playing for the Hobart Hurricanes. This injury has ruled him out of the rest of the BBL season, but his timeline suggests he will be ready for the T20 World Cup, which starts in early February.

“David’s recovery timeframe is favorable. He should be available no matter what,” McDonald confirmed.

Tournament Preparation and Strategy

Australia will begin their T20 World Cup campaign on February 11, facing Ireland and Zimbabwe in the group stage. The team does not encounter Sri Lanka until February 16, providing an opportunity to give David extra recovery time if necessary.

The squad remains provisional and could see changes based on BBL performances or any last-minute injuries. As part of preparations, Australia will play three T20Is in Pakistan from late January. This schedule may impact participation in the BBL finals for players like Cummins, Hazlewood, and David.

Looking Ahead

Despite the injury uncertainties, Australia’s T20 World Cup squad balances experience and explosive talent. With Cummins and Hazlewood leading the pace attack and Tim David adding firepower in the middle order, the team looks well-equipped to chase the trophy. Fans will be watching closely as selectors finalize the squad ahead of the ICC deadline.
